Untitled (Identity) was created as part of an exhibition at the Fifth Parallel Gallery in 2019 entitled Non-Archival exploring impermanence. Over the course of a week, I entered the gallery and reconfigured an arrangement of nylons, yarn, string, rope, and poly-fil stuffing on the gallery wall. Each day, the materials were pulled, stretched, tangled, gathered, and suspended into a new configuration.

Rather than producing a fixed sculpture, the work existed through its continual transformation. The materials remained the same, but their relationships to one another, and to the architecture of the gallery, were constantly shifting. Threads extended across the wall, knots accumulated, and loose materials moved between containment and dispersal.

Through this repetitive process, Untitled (Identity) considers identity as something constructed, unstable, and continually changing. There is no final form to the work; each arrangement was temporary, existing only until I returned to alter it.
